Fair Michigan’s legal services team will provide pro bono representation to clients whose cases have been approved for assistance by the Board of Fair Michigan. It will continue the push for equality under the law while seeking the support of elected prosecutors and like-minded members of the legal community. Legal assistance may involve simple procedures, such as providing assistance to a person who requires a Personal Protection Order against an abusive partner, or helping a transgender person appeal the denial of hormone medications from an insurance company. Fair Michigan also plans to bring potentially precedent-setting cases, such as mounting challenges to state laws that permit state-funded adoption agencies to discriminate against same-sex married couples seeking to adopt children from foster care. Fair Michigan’s legal services team seeks to serve women and the LGBTQ community whose rights are often not upheld within the legal system.
