The Fair Michigan Foundation is fighting to end discrimination in Michigan and ensure everyone is treated fairly.

Our vision is to create a Michigan where the presence and contributions of everyone are welcomed and celebrated regardless of their gender, gender identity, sex, or sexual orientation; where intolerance is challenged and defeated; where justice prevails and where the civil rights of all people are valued and respected.

The Issue

Great news! The 2021 and 2022 decisions handed down by the Michigan Court of Claims and the Michigan Supreme Court determined that the Elliott Larsen Civil Right Act does include protections for people based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

However, discrimination and acts of violence against the LGBTQ+ community continue to occur. 2021 was the worst year on record of hate-based attacks against transgender and gender non-conforming persons, including a record number of homicides. The current political and social climates have encouraged both those who would create and enforce laws that discriminate against LGBTQ+ people and those who feel free to attack members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Who We are

The Fair Michigan Foundation is an organization dedicated to advocacy, education, and outreach regarding LGBTQ+ and men’s and women’s civil rights in the state of Michigan. We work hard to educate the public on issues related to civil rights, and nondiscrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, gender, or gender identity.

The Fair Michigan Justice Project is a partnership between Fair Michigan and the prosecutors’ offices and law enforcement in Wayne, Ingham, Oakland, and Washtenaw counties where Fair Michigan provides guidance and help in prosecuting hate crimes committed against LGBTQ+ persons.

The Fair Michigan Name Change Project is a partnership between Fair Michigan and a team of attorneys that provide no-cost name change services to qualified transgender people.
